This beautiful landscape painting by Cornelis Kuypers shows a forest scene with towering birches. In the foreground, the green grass, touched by the light. The eye wanders upward, attracted by the blue sky above the clouds. A couple at work hidden between the trees. The painting shows the insignificance of man in the midst of nature.

Biography of Cornelis Kuypers

Cornelis Kuypers (Gorinchem 1864- Soest 1932) is regarded as one of the late bloomers of the Hague School. Kuypers (also written as Kuijpers) came from a family of painters. His grandfather Cornelis Kuipers, father Jan Kuypers, and son were painters. In 1892 he married Elisabeth Terlingen and settled in Rijswijk, where he came under the influence of the Hague School. His depiction of the landscape is strongly reminiscent of Willem Maris. Stimulated by his teachers from the Quellinus School in Amsterdam, Kuypers went en plein air into nature with his easel. In 1896 he moved with his family to the wooded Renkum, where he often went into the Veluwe to paint in a silver-grey and emerald green palette. Meadows with low-hanging fog, ditches, flowering orchards and bobbing tjalks along the water's edge were subjects he often captured. Figures always remained subordinate to nature. Later in his career, the emphasis in his work came to lie strongly on large light clouds. Together with Théophile de Bock and Charles Dankmeijer, among others, he exhibited at the Renkum artists' association Pictura Veluvensis. He later derived the nickname "painter of the Veluwezoom" from this. Kuypers had great success with his work abroad, especially in the United States, where he sold a lot of work through art dealership Buffa. In 1907 and 1911 he won medals at an international salon in Barcelona. His work can be seen in the Museum Arnhem, the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, among others.
