Pol Dom - Lyklema Fine Art

Paul (Pol) Dom (Antwerpen 1885 - 1978 Den Haag) was born in Antwerp. After his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, he participated in the competition for the Prix de Rome for engraving and received an honorable mention (3rd prize). Due to the more open art climate in the Netherlands, he settled there for two periods in Laren.

From 1909 to 1910 and from 1914 to 1916. He lived in Brussels for another three years with his wife and artist Betsy van Gelder before settling in The Hague for good with his daughter in 1927. In 1936 Pol Dom also took Dutch nationality. His name ‘changed’from Pol to Paul.

His painting style, rooted in the subdued naturalism that dominated Belgium around 1900, was well received in our country. His "boldness of color and line" was admired. Pol Dom also made a name for himself as a political illustrator, graphic artist, and portrait painter.

He was a member of Pulchri Studio and the Haagse Kunstkring and exhibited there frequently. In addition, his work was shown at exhibitions in Amsterdam (St. Lucas), The World Exhibitions of Paris (1937) and New York (1939) and further in Barcelona, Venice, Toronto (1940) and Buenos Aires.

Dom was inspired by a variety of materials and subjects. In addition to being a painter, he was above all a draftsman and graphic artist and earned his living as a cartoonist for the Haagse Courant and for children's books, including Kruimeltje by Chris van Abcoude and De Schippers van de Kameleon by Hotze de Roos.Paul (Pol) Dom (Antwerpen 1885 - 1978 Den Haag) was born in Antwerp.
