An intimate and characterful genre painting by the German painter Hermann Groeber (1865–1935), depicting a woman absorbed in her knitting.

The expressive face, richly painted clothing and delicate details of the interior give the work a strong sense of character and period. The red-and-white knitting provides a striking accent within the darker tones of the composition.

Groeber was active in Munich and worked as a portrait, figure, landscape and genre painter. His paintings are characterised by a keen observation of people and a confident, painterly approach.
