Gernot Kissel (1939–2008) was a German painter and printmaker whose work was exhibited widely across Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and England. His work is distinguished by a strong emphasis on colour, expressive contours and richly textured surfaces, often with a direct, tactile quality.

Combining a sensual painterly approach with the formal reduction of modernism, Kissel created vibrant compositions in which colour contrasts and the human figure play a central role.
