Born in Semarang on the island of Java in 1867, Van Lelyveld (1867 – 1954) spent much of his life connected to the Dutch East Indies. His work reflects a profound appreciation for the people, culture and landscapes of Indonesia. As one of the artists associated with the tradition often referred to as the Mooi Indië movement, he became known for his evocative depictions of local life, combining academic training with a keen eye for atmosphere and character.

In this portrait, Van Lelyveld moves beyond mere representation to capture the individuality and presence of his sitter. The subtle modelling of the face, the warm palette and the softly painted background draw the viewer into an intimate encounter. The result is a timeless and compelling work that embodies both the artistic and cultural heritage of the Dutch East Indies.
